Penglipuran village in Bangli regency could maintain their hundreds of years live traditios in the rapid growth of tourism and urbanism in Bali. The villagers stand for their heritage traditions to live side by side with a sparkling modern world.
Very Unique! Possibly the most appropriate word for Panglipuran. This traditional village has their houses's gate so called "angkul-angkul" in uniform. The physical appearance of this vilage is also very typical and beautiful. The main road of the village is a straight narrow path with some staircases. The tourism potential that the village has are a unique and strong customary, beatiful bamboo forest, and the high frequency of ceremonies.
Located in Bangli regency, about 45 km from Denpasar, Desa Adat Penglipuran been around since 700 years ago, at the time of the kingdom of Bangli. The resident of Bayung Gede Village in Kintamani for some reason moved to the area and built Penglipuran as a village. The name Penglipuran cames from the Balinese word "Pengeling Pura" which means a holy place for remembering the ancestors. All its physical and cultural development are referring to the ancentral lands, Bayung Gede. Even for some ceremonies they still have to apply the ancestral lands blessing.
Penglipuran is on 700 meters above sea level, made the air are cool. The village stucture and landscaping are made so neat, community center (balai banjar) and community fasilities are in open area with a nature and garden combined. The air are fresh and clean cause the village main street are car free areas, no polution and no crowded.
Most of the villagers are farmers, and now the womens begining to build a home industries to made a handycrafts from bamboo as its available arround the village. The villagers are open and friendly welcome the outsiders who are visit Penglipuran for tour or business. Almost the entire of the young generations of the village are do formal education ranging from elementary to college but they still preserve the tradition that they inherited from their ancestors.
Bamboo is the dominant materials to use by the villagers. It is not surprising because 40% of the total area is a forest of bamboo. Materials for the building can be taken from this forest, as well as to material goods and the need for ritual craft. From the ecological side, bamboo forest functions vital to resist erosion considering the condition of the sloping village land.
The ability to maintain spatial and traditional buildings in the Penglipuran village, become a main attraction of this place then eventually developed into tourist village. Persistence of the population to keep the authenticity of the village also deserve an award, not surprisingly Penglipuran has obtain a Kalpataru award, the highes award for environtment preserve in Indonesia.
