Melasti, A Holy Parades


Melasti or Melis ritual procession related to the celebrations of Nyepi (silence day) Holy day in Bali, cunducted during 3 days before Nyepi.

"The series of ritual events can be adapted to the conditions, time and local environment (desa, kala, patra), said Chairman Parisada Hindu Dharma Indonesia (PHDI) Bali, Drs. Dr. I Gusti Ngurah Sudiana, MSI.


He said the rituals "Melasti" means clean "pratime" (hallowed effigies of deity) or sacred objects into the sea, lakes or springs. The people of living near the coast to a procession "Melasti" into the sea and for those who live in mountainous areas do so to the lake, while people living in the middle that is far from the sea and mountain "Melasti" can be made to the nearest springs.

Ngurah Sudiana explains, each traditional village in Bali can choose one of three good days are determined to implement the "Melasti". Events that commonly involve the community while carrying sacred offerings and equipment, accompanied by traditional Balinese music (gamelan) that pounding.

Hindus in Bali in commemorating of the Saka new year, conducted a series of religious ceremonies that begin with the Melasti. The procession of melasti will be start at Pura Puseh in every villages, the community prepared all the ceremony needs. Start with to "fetch" other Pratime from another two villages temples, Pura Desa and Pura Dalem. This event will make the streets in Bali full of sacred parades and sacred welcoming dance (Pendet) will performed to welcoming other pratime that fetched form other two temples.

Once all Pratime gathering in Pura Puseh, than melasti start. Some villages will choose to long march to the sea, lake, or springs but more of the villages will using car and truck to bring the pratime, the ceremony needs, and the people to the melasti destination because of the distance.  

It is a beautiful view in Melasti celebration that you can find in Bali if you pay a visit to Bali Island before the Nyepi Day where entire Hindu people in Bali come trooping to local temple and carry the symbol of the infinite and other Hindu religion to sea. This celebration is very amazing where Hindu people with their typical clothes walk to the sea accompanied by the traditional gamelan the same time bring the pennon (Umbul-Umbul) and other symbols. After cleaning the symbol of the infinite or other Hindu symbols, entire Hindu people return to rural to bring back its symbols to each temple. There is a happened unique view here where some Hindu people experience of the Kesurupan (occurrence of outside its consciousness nature) designating the ceremony run at ease. Multifarious offerings have been prepared inclusive Balinese Traditional Dance welcome the deity arrival and its symbol from the sea before placed in each temple. This matter represents the important shares from celebration of big holiday of Hindu people where Hindu People will celebrate the Nyepi Day.
