Magoak-goakan (A Troops Booster Games)

Magoak-goakan is a dance games from the Northern side of Bali island, Buleleng regency. Its a games, that played by the kids or teenagers but could be performed as a mini opera. The name magoak-goakan is taken from a bird name Goak (Raven). This game is about solidity and keep the group in form.

The games of magoak-goakan played by at least 10 people 1 person will be a hunter and the others will form a long line connected by holding the person in front of them. The hunter will try to catch the tail which is the very last person in the line but the header of the line will of course protect its tail. Once its catch the rest of the gorup will ask the hunter, what he want to release the tail and what ever the hunter want, the group has to grant it to exchange the tail that had catch by making a noice as a group of raven.


In 1584 The greatest Buleleng's king Ki Panji Sakti has moves the downtown of Panji to a more strategic places. In this new place he built his palace and temples for his people. He like to play with his people, one of his favorites games is "magoak-goakan". This games inspire him to form a special troops to consolidate his kingdom defense. The troops named "Taruna Goak" that leads by Ki Gusti Tamblang and Ki Gusti Made Batan as the assistant.

The Taruna Goak troops are form by 2000 chosen midman, has a great agility and ability in war. With this troops Ki Panji Sakti and his sons attack Blambangan kingdom and has a victory in Blambangan battle and then take over the kingdom under his rules, unfortunately one of his sons name Ki Gusti Ngurah Panji Nyoman has died in battle and make him sad.

In the journey of time this traditionals people's game is still continues played at the village of Panji in Buleleng. Its usually played at the day after Nyepi day, played by the Panji's teenagers on the mud puddle. Its also performed every year in Pesta Kesenian Bali (annually Bali Art Festival) to represent Buleleng's people typical games/dance.
